I hate hardware

I think I hate hardware. I understand that when I get a new laptop, its brand new and a lot of the new hardware in it is in beta releases or very new and I do get into problems getting it to work. OK. I can accept that.

But when old things – like my palm – starts acting up without any reason, i really just hate it.

So in the middle of all work with getting the new laptop up and running, I now cant sync my palm any more. I have not really done anything with the Palm T3 I have for ages and on Monday I was syncing it as usually and I get an error on the palm and the sync fails. Its when it tries to sync the memos, and I kind of need that as I’m using that to transfer my drivers journal.

So checking the network I did found some notes about this problem and aparnetly there is some problems and there is a program called dbfix that could fix it. So i downloaded it and run the test and there was 3 bad records so i when ahead and bought it. The code cam in god time, Tuesday morning, and I could enter it and try. Well it said that it fixed the problem but still – same error.

So its time for the big dangerous thing – wipe it clean and restore the backup. Scary. But here it goes. Press power and do a reset at the same time, and the press up for wipe it clean.

And sync to restore the backup. I thought. No luck. Despite the fact that I told kpilot to Overwrite all and all problem records should take the PC and overwrite, I got 200 warning, asking me what to do with conflictng records. Well i klicked PC overvwrite 200 times, and i still not had all the records back.

Well more googeling and testing and i found out that i had to run pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot -r <dir>to get the files back. So doing that i got the data back but not the protected memory so i still had a bit of a problem.

As i haven’t installed or done much on the palm more that uring it for timesheet and tripjournal, I used the Backupbuddy (yes – a leftover from the old windows way of doing things) backup program to the card and restoed it there (3 month old) but I did get all the records back.

Then syncing with pilote-xfer again i sort of got all back to the way it should. I think. 🙁

Well its mindnight when thiswas done and I dont have more time today to work on it so I guess i have to do with it as it is and work more on it another day.
