Getting the nvdia drive to work

So its back to the new laptop. As I said in the last post about the installing of the laptop I got the Lan to work and now it would be nice to have more than 800×600 screen. The ACER Aspire 8920 comes with a very nice NVIDia GeForce 9500M GS graphics card. And the kubuntu installation will not find it out of the box.

I did do some checking on the net before i got the new laptop and nvidias pages says that the 192.12 driver should suport the cart.

So i downloaded envyng to se if that would install the card as its supsed to do. And no it did not find my new card. After doing some test with it and failing I whent ahead and downloaded the binary driver directly from nvidias site and tried that one. They have a brand new 173.14.05 drivet out there, but I ran into quite some problems installing that also. What to do?

Well more googeling gave me a pointer to a problem with machines running 4 gb of memory, so I tied and removed 2 gb of ram memory and started running envyng again. Still the same problem. I actually even went so far as to reinstall everything from scratch and start over, if I has made a mess of someting during the way. But no luck.

There is a option on the second page of envyng that gives you the option of save the packages, as well as ust download them, so I tried that and got the files.

I then manually tried to install it with the line:

When i was running that i got an error saying hat it was missing the dkms package so I have a suspitions that this was the problem all along. he dkms package is the dynamic kernal modules suport package so thats defently needed for installation. Installed that with sudo apt-get install dkms and i could install the nviia driver. And the new and facy screen came up in 1920 x 1080 resolution. A nice success. Its now just time to test it a bit more.
