Ben Bova – Jupiter

The book I read and had in my timeline was “Jupier”. But after reading that and the next one “The Rock Rats”, I think that it should have been read after the rock rats. But I did read it in this order, so here we go.

This is the first book where the plot is around Jupiter, and the sequal is “Levithans of Jupiter”. Continue reading

John Carter movie and books

This summer I get the John Carter film to watch. It is of couse the film of Edgar Rice Burroughs first book in the Barsoom series of books.

Despite the fact that the reviver did not like the film that much I like it.

Its not a film from the book exactly but made with the book as inspiration – or as its says in the film “A story base on the A Princess of Mars book”.

I have read the books some time ago (quite some time) and I had the expression that the film differs from the film a bit even if one can recognize most of the plot.

The film starts with Net (what John Carter calls Edgar Rice Burroughs in the film) travelling to get the the funeral of John Carter. He then gets from john’s  attorney, Carter’s personal journal and the film flashes back to Arizona and John Carters adventures looking for gold after the civil war.

He finds a cave when trying to get away from the Apache Indians and a Thern appears and John kills it, He then manages to travel to Mars, more or less by mistake.

From there, most of the film takes place on Mars, and its only in the end, we returns to earth. I will not go further into the story, but I can say if you Like SF and grand adventures the film is nice and I really loved it. Even of the story differs from the book a bit. If some one don’t like the ending its clearly for the film was planned to be just the first of 3 films based on the Barsoom series of books.

Sopplunch

Continue reading

Ben Bova – Empire Builders

After finishing the Poswersat book, the next one on the schedule was “Empire Builders”.

This is the second book about Dan Randolph even if it was writte well before Powersat.

The earth is heading towards a greenhouse cliff, a sudden climate change that will destroy much of the planet in ten years if something isn’t done soon. The ice caps will melt. Cities will be flooded. Millions will die. When Randolph tries to let people know what’s going on and try to help orchestrate a plan to avoid this catastrophe, government officials from the Global Economic Council (the GEC) confiscate his company, imprison him, and silence his scientific team.

The story continues and as usual it quite good and i find the book hard to put down, or stop listen to if you, like me listen to the audio book.

Stefan Rudnicki does an very excellent job adjusting his voice to each of the characters so you get a god idea of who speach. Speech tags become redundant. He captures a variety of accents well, and the voices match the personalities. He tries hard to get the Japanese right, but it doesn’t roll off his tongue well.

Its even a bit scary to think that this book was written back in 1993 and quite well talks about some of the problems we have been facing today. The tsunamis in Indonesia and the flooding of New Orleans.
