I really hate hardware – more about palm crashes

Ok so i did crash my palmpilot. And got it kind of working again as I wrote about here and this is a continuation on that.

Well I did get back my palmpilot to working order by using the pilot-xfer program. What I fully missed was that the hotsync settings – like the HotsyncID was missing. I did start experience this when my datebok5 program started to report it was into the 44 day of its trial. Hum what the heck is this.

Well I first thought that i missed something in the settings as I know that not all things on the palm can be backed up. So I started looking thu my email to find my registration details for datebook 5. Could not find it. Dam. So I went to the homepage for pimlico software. And I tried the free upgrade to datebook6. And after a while I got the result mail and apparently i bought the first datebook in 1999. To old to get an upgrade so I went and bought the upgrade. It was only 12 dollar and I do love the datebook program and the new one has some nice features so I did not feel bad about that.

While waiting I continued working on the palm pilot. I downloaded and installed the new datebook6 program.

As I cant use graphical kpilot program i have to use the pilot-xfer program. Until they solved the visor module problem i have to use this manually. Its not a big problem. I can cope – just a bit annoying. So I unpacked the zip archive and got the files and then installed it with:

Press sync on the palm and its installed – and yes I did followed the instructions and removed the old datebook 5 on the palm before I installed this one.

But continuing working on the palm i got more message about different program not being installed correct or did not have its registration. What the heck is this. So I got an idea and checked the HotsyncID and that was ofcourse blank. That’s why all of the programs are failing.

So how do you set up the Hotsync ID when you cant use Palm Dekstop programs. Well back to help is the pilot-link system of programs that the pilot-xfer is part of. It consists of quite a lot of different programs and it can handle most of the standard databases in the palm. And it has a program for reading and setting the HotsyncID and UserID on the palm. The manual for pilot-link is talking about the install-user program but that is actually called pilot-install-user on use ubuntu system.

So after some testing with the pilot-dlpsh program i tried the pilot-install-user program. First try did not work as it should as the system I’m using is UTF-8 and the pilot-link programs cant handle that. So I set the terminal window to ISO-8859-1 (found under the Setting->Encoding menu) and the run:

This set the user name right (and yes – set back the teminal to default after) and now my programs is working again as it should.
